Ancient Arabia Used Psychoactive Harmal Plant in Iron Age
Archaeological research conducted by the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History identified chemical traces of harmal (Peganum harmala), also known as wild rue or Syrian rue, in burial sites in present-day southeastern Arabia dating to approximately 500 BCE. This finding represents early physical evidence of the intentional use of plants with psychoactive and medicinal properties in Iron Age Arabia.
Peganum harmala is a flowering plant native to arid regions of the Middle East and Central Asia. Traditional use records describe its incorporation into cultural rituals and traditional medicine systems. The plant contains harmala alkaloids, which act as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Researchers used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to detect organic residues of the plant within funerary incense burners excavated from an Iron Age cemetery in northern Oman.
The analysis confirmed the plant's chemical signature, indicating its deliberate inclusion in ancient funerary rituals and ceremonial practices rather than intrusive modern contamination. The contextual recovery of Peganum harmala residues within incense burners aligns with documented historical and contemporary practices across the Middle East and Central Asia, where the plant is traditionally burned in ritual contexts.
These archaeological findings provide evidence of early botanical knowledge and the ritualistic use of psychoactive flora in the ancient Arabian Peninsula.
