Herbs That are More Effective in Treating Lyme Than Antibiotics

Archived article ·

Essential oils derived from several botanical sources have been evaluated by researchers for activity against the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. The investigated plants included garlic cloves, myrrh trees, cinnamon bark, amyris wood, spiked ginger lily blossoms, may chang fruit, oregano, clove buds, citronella, thyme leaves, cumin seeds, and allspice berries. According to reports on research led by Ying Zhang at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, laboratory dish evaluations demonstrated that certain plant essential oils showed activity against stationary-phase or persister forms of the bacteria, with researchers observing no bacterial regrowth over a 21-day period in vitro.

Further research and testing remain necessary to evaluate these findings beyond laboratory models.
