Brahmi is a small, creeping perennial herb with numerous branches and small, oblong, relatively thick leaves arranged opposite to each other on the stem. The plant reaches a height that allows it to spread as a ground cover. The flowers are small and light purple or white with four to five petals. Brahmi is unique among aquatic plants because it can grow naturally in wetlands, shallow water, damp and muddy shores, and can tolerate slightly brackish conditions.

It is widely distributed across most regions of the world including China, India, Canada, USA, Brazil, Australia, Argentina, Nigeria, and South Africa. The plant thrives in sub-tropical regions with hot and humid weather conditions, with marshy land being best suited for its growth.
